REAL ID Act: DHS’s way to stop terrorism or National ID Card System?

14 January 2008

Reading the new Department of Homeland Security’s REAL ID Act, I am vaguely reminded of the ID cards for the Jewish.  I understand the desire to allow people only one license at a time but the fact that terrorists, whether they immigrated legally or not, or illegal immigrants are able to gain a driver’s license without being US citizens (and thus are not state citizens, which is one of the requirements to get a driver’s license).

The REAL ID would change the driver’s license of every person under the age of 50 and have them registered in a national system.  Each ID would have three different security measures on them.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said “This is a win-win. As long as people use driver’s licenses to identify themselves for whatever reason there’s no reason for those licenses to be easily counterfeited or tampered with” according to  I would like to state that this is an unreasonable claim.  Many people do NOT have driver’s licenses.  People who live in or around a city and use public transportation often do not have a driver’s license.

What DHS never mentions is how not having a US REAL ID will stop a terrorist from committing an act of terrorism.  The reason DHS claims the REAL ID is necessary because one of the 9-11 terrorists had 4 drivers licenses.  Never does DHS mention how these driver’s licenses are the reason September 11th happened.  Honestly, I thought it was caused by a hatred towards America and a failure of the US government to deport immigrants with expired visas.

The ACLU calls this “the first-ever national identity card system” and I have to say I agree.  This goes beyond saying we are going to check your 2 or 3 different types of documentation and make sure you are in fact you to saying we are going to monitor you.  The government wants this REAL ID to be presented as your identification whenever you are asked for ID.  This makes it easier for you to be monitored when you go on an airplane and travel or when you buy products at a store.

This REAL ID is taking away your freedom and putting Big Brother with you no matter where you go.  Honestly, an ID card will not stop criminals from breaking the law.  It will just add extra cost for tax payers and drivers but does not guarantee safety.

This ID purports to make us safer from terrorists who may sneak into the US, and from other illegal immigrants. While I agree that these issues are of vital importance, this ID will do very little to make us more secure. It will not address our real vulnerabilities. It will however, make us much less free. In reality, this ID is a Trojan horse. It pretends to offer desperately needed border control in order to stampede Americans into sacrificing what is uniquely American: our constitutionally protected liberty…. this ID… re-defines “terrorism” in broad new terms that could well include members of firearm rights and anti-abortion groups, or other groups (Minutemen) as determined by who ever is in power at the time….. this legislation…. punishes law-abiding citizens – criminals will ignore it! The REAL ID offers us a false sense of greater security at the cost of taking a gigantic step toward making America a police state.

Well said. I agree. If the government takes one freedom, they will take more. REAL ID never addresses the issues that lead to terrorism. And it is certainly not border control. Unless the government starts giving mandatory ID checks on the roads, they will never know if some non IDed ‘alien’ is walking in this country. Terrorists and criminals are smart. If they want an ID they will either a) get around the system or b) counterfit one.

    Take Back Our Country Song

Can you please place a link on your website / or blog; to this Take Back Our Country Song it’s a patriotic song that is very inspiring, and truthful. I wrote this song after being fed up with what I see happening in my neighborhood and to our country daily on the news.

I am just an ordinary citizen that went away to serve at age 19. And I am sick and tired of the lies and chaos our ELECTED SELLOUT OFFICIALS has put this country into. So I wanted to do my part, as a soldier of the USANG, I wrote this song and put it on this video.

My state Louisiana was hit hard by hurricane Katrina and hundreds of illegal aliens moved into our community took away jobs that we Americans were ready to do, and now crime has gone thru the roof. I am sick and tired of these people in my neighborhood and hanging out on our street corners. WE MUST DO SOMETHING TO PUT A STOP TO THIS!

Please check out my video Take Back Our Country Song on here’s the link. And FORWARD it to everyone on your email list. This is my way of fighting back and giving back to my country.

Please, I served my country in the US Army National Guards, and I hate what’s happening to our country. We must do all we can to Take Her Back!

    Thank you,
    Richie Collins
